What’s a Magnetostrictive Sensor?

Basically, it’s a super accurate way to tell where something is, usually the position of a piston inside a hydraulic cylinder.

Here’s the simple version of how it works:

• There’s a wire inside the sensor.
• A small magnet moves along the outside of that wire, usually mounted to a moving part.
• The sensor sends out a signal, and when that signal hits the magnet, it creates a tiny vibration (you’d never hear it).
• The sensor measures how long it takes that vibration to come back, and that’s how it knows exactly where the magnet, and the machine part, is.

• It never touches anything, so there’s no wear or tear.
• It’s really accurate, perfect for machines that need precise control.
